Oh how the times have changed.     Two years ago I was waking up at 5 am to get ready for work.  Followed by an hour long drive to a job where I spent 10+ hours doing something I didn’t really love.  After a long day, I would  drive another hour and a half to get to the gym for a quick, hour workout (something that I lived for daily).   I dreaded waking up at 5 am.  It was the worst part of my day.  I hated having to be up “so early” for a job that I just didn’t enjoy.   Flash forward to today.  There are days throughout the week where I’m up at 4 am or earlier, voluntarily, to train with my partners.  Many mornings I’m up by 5 and occasionally I get to sleep in until 7 (the highlight of my week).  Our team is even training at 5 am on Saturday mornings which makes for a very long Saturday, I might add – but I’m loving every minute.   The difference now is … I don’t dread it.  Don’t get me wrong, when I first wake up and hear my alarm, I say “WTF” silently […]

I wish I was making this up.  I really do.  But I’m not.   The FDA has approved a new weight loss stomach pump called AsprieAssist to “combat obesity”.  The device is considered minimally invasive and includes a tube that goes from the inside of the stomach to a port on the outside of the abdomen.  The pump is attached to the outside port as needed to remove about a third of the stomach’s contents at a time.   So let’s get this straight.  A person can consume their usual amount of too much food, and then pump out ⅓ of it after they’re finished eating into the toilet.  Even better, to get this pump, they have to get surgery and continue to be under the care of medical professionals so that as they “lose weight” they can have their pump attached appropriately. For every individual, mentally self-imposed limits are different. If you’ve been a lifelong athlete or been trained by the military, chances are your mentally self-imposed limits are different from those of the “average joe”. You’ve spent years developing your mental strength and you have learned to meet barriers set by your brain and then push through them. For many of us though, CrossFit is the first “sport” we’ve played in a long time and being competitive in this field is a first. I know for me, growing up as a gymnast and then cheerleader, there were fears I had to push past when tumbling passes were challenging or when I split the beam (ouch). However, those self-imposed fears are nothing compared to the barriers I face with CrossFit. You see, in CrossFit, more times than not I’m fighting a battle against myself. Sure, there are other people doing my same workout, and I would like to do better than them, but more than that, it’s my own brain that is limiting me.

For years, Fia’s has been know as a Paleo company. However, they’re actually expanding their brand to include meals that aren’t just strictly Paleo. In fact, yesterday I had a pasta dish that was out of this world AH-MAZ-ING! I hadn’t had pasta in forever and it tasted so good. I was so fulfilled after the meal and it hit every craving I could have ever had. For my family, Fia’s is a part of our weekly meal planning. It is dinner every night during the week and my husbands lunch most days (mine too from time to time). Before Fia’s there were many a night when I would come home after coaching, it would be after 8pm, and I would have to start dinner. If my husband had already made dinner, there were still dishes to do and a mess to clean up. Dinner was always such a chore because of the hours that I work.

Have you ever shown up to the gym and thought, why am I doing this? This workout is stupid. These are thoughts that we’ve all have so all ya’ll should have your hands raised. What I’ve found as a coach and programmer for my affiliate is this:  There are many members that feel that the workouts are programmed incorrectly, aren’t designed with real purpose, and/or aren’t fulfilling their individual workout needs.  And this is a theme throughout many gyms. People are members for six months and think they know everything there is to know about programming. The truth is, programming takes a lot of time and effort.  There is a specific formula that is followed and workouts are designed with an end goal in mind.  Programming is generally written out a month or more at a time and a plethora of factors are taken into account when developing workouts. Is every gym this thorough?  No.  And I apologize in advance if you’re at a affiliate that randomly programs with no real rhyme or reason.  But CrossFit Iron Legion is not one of them. Raise your hand if you’ve been on vacation before and completely fallen off the wagon. Good, I’m not the only one. I went to Nashville Tennessee this past week, and boy did I fall off the wagon.  It wasn’t so much the food as much as the booze but I assure you, I did in fact nose dive off the sugar cliff of hell. You know what though?  Shit happens. This week I want to talk about how we get back on the wagon after we’ve been kicked off for a few days. So, everyone eats bad in their own way.  For me, I didn’t really eat that poorly but I sure took down a plethora of sugar filled adult beverages.  From wine to margaritas and everything in between, my belly got its’ fill.  With that being said, for me, getting back to clean eating means cutting the sugar. Monday I went right back to my macros, tracking everything I ate.  Honestly, in just 24 hours, I’m already feeling better.  It’s as though my body was saying “Thank Goodness! I’m so excited.  For the first time in forever it seems I’m taking some time off work – well kinda.  I’ll still be attached to my phone I’m sure, checking emails and Facebook updates. I’ll be traveling to Nashville, TN with my family for my Aunt’s wedding.  I will be gone Wednesday through Sunday–5 whole days! That being said, this week I want to focus on how to train while your travel – especially while on vacation! My going in plan (I’m sure it’s certain to change) is to workout at my home box in Apopka, Florida before we leave for the airport on Wednesday morning.  I have had every intention of maintaining my normal programming but the more I think about it the more I realize just doing the 1 hour class at the places I drop into will be easier and more realistic.  I hate being the girl that’s like “can I workout in the back and do my own programming”.  I know sometimes you have to but to me it kind of comes off with a hint of arrogance.  Due to our travel time, I will have to hit the 6 am class – I’m really looking forward to […]

I think sometimes people think I’m kidding when I say thoughts become things. I think that people also don’t believe me when I say you have to do something every-single-day if you want to get better at it. I’m here to tell you people, I’m not making this shit up. I didn’t always live by this concept and honestly, for most of my life, I just tried hard and things came to me fairly easily. I must also say though that I never really attempted much that was outside of my comfort zone or realm of possibility to accomplish. When I started CrossFit it became evident rather quickly that to get better at this sport, I had to practice. Like, every single day practice. About 3 months ago I was completely fed up with not being able to do a strict handstand push-up. At Wodapalooza in January of this year, I was little help for my teammates Lindy and Katie during the swim wod because I literally could do like 1 or 2 strict handstand push-ups. That’s it. This was a skill that had evaded me for so long. The kicker though was that I hadn’t worked on it either. I had continued to bitch and moan about not being able to do them but was doing nothing to improve my abilities.

I’m really so excited for the next few months because there is just so much in the works. First, I’m a year out from the leaving the public school system and things couldn’t be going better. Well, they always could go a little better, but things really are great. It’s amazing what happens when you commit your time and energy to something. It truly will manifest itself in your life. Business couldn’t be better, I’m training harder than ever, and the fruits of my efforts are being shown in all aspects of my life. So, what’s next? Well, right now I’m currently working with a few individuals to develop a home for my blog. A website that will house my blog, links to the companies I work with, and a home for all things CrossFit and Fitness lifestyle related. I’m basically trying to brand myself and I’m really kind of excited about it!
