Haters vs Criticism

by ironborn· February 24, 2017· in Uncategorized· comments
I start every day now listening to one of my new favorite podcasts. The MFCEO project by Andy Frisella is the perfect combination of truth, harsh reality, and curse words which are a winning combination for the best morning ever in my book.   He recently had a podcast titled Haters vs Criticism.  In a nutshell, the theme is this; you’re really  not cool enough to have haters.  People don’t actually hate you.   You really don’t have anything to hate on at all.   In fact, you probably just have critics. Some critics offer positive criticism well others offer criticism that is slightly more misguided, but either way, it’s criticism nonetheless.     I’ll have to admit, this was a little hard to hear. I really thought I had haters. People who wanted to hate on what I was accomplishing, what I was doing, the approach I was taking.  People who want to just talk shit.   But, real talk, I’m really not that important. In the grand scheme of taking over the world, I’m just a measly footprint at this point.        Now, that’s not to say that forever I will be here, and at some point I […]

It’s a GIRL

by ironborn· February 14, 2017· in Uncategorized· comments
This Valentine’s Day is extra special.     We’re having a girl!   To be very honest, I didn’t have my heart set on one gender or the other.  I didn’t want to be disappointed if it was a boy and I wanted a girl, or vice versa.   Also, I was really cool with not finding out at all.  The idea of being surprised enticed me.  But the hubby really wanted to know, for the ease of everything, so we decided to do the reveal.   The Box Tribe Games was a great opportunity to reveal.  We knew we would be surrounded by some of our closest friends and family and were excited to have them be a part of our exciting day.     A girl is what I secretly wanted.  I can’t wait to dress her up in all the adorable clothes and then deal with her sass when she’s old enough to form words.  If she’s cut from the same cloth as me, I have my work cut out for me.   But, regardless, we’ll love her for exactly who she is.   Enjoy this love day with yourself or your significant other and remember, it’s […]

Kindness.

by ironborn· February 03, 2017· in Uncategorized· comments
In today’s world, full of violence, protests, and hatred, it is hard to find kindness.  But kindness really is all around us.   Today, an acquaintance through work, whom I’ve never met in person, sent me a card in the mail (pictured above) full of kind words and meaningful thoughts.     You see, I had offered advice and some of my time to her over the past few weeks, as I do many people.  She had questions about how to make her business work better and I offered my two cents on what we were doing here at Iron Legion.  I took time from my schedule to make time for her.     I want her to be successful and didn’t mind offering a helping hand.  I didn’t mind being kind.   As our conversations finished, I left the door open for future conversations and made sure she knew that I was available to her if she needed me.  I didn’t expect anything from her for my time.  I guess my only real thought was that, in return, she would make herself available if I ever needed her.   When I received the card from Allison today, I was […]

Today is the day I was born.  On this day, 27 years ago, Mama Gibson brought me into this world, without drugs, but with some wonderful stitches as an afterthought.   Birthdays have never been a big thing for me.  Some girls celebrate their birthday for like a whole month.  For me, it really is just another day.     This probably has to do with the fact that on a 5 Love Languages Quiz I get a 0 for gifts.  They just don’t mean much to me, giving or receiving.   To me, my birthday is so much more than a party and presents.  It’s a day for me to reflect on what I’ve accomplished in the past year, what I missed out on, what’s left to conquer, what I can do differently in the coming year, and what kind of person I have been/will be in the future.   It’s a day of reflection.     It’s good to take those days, and to me, my birthday is a great day for it.     26 was a pretty kick ass year.   I trained harder than I ever have before and physically became the best version of myself. It seems like every week there is a theme to the questions I get regarding my pregnancy.     This week, it has been “How much time are you taking for maternity leave?”.  I’ve literally been asked like 10 times this week.     And honestly, that’s a really good question.  I’m thinking …. 12-24 hours 🙂   Seriously though, I don’t know.     You see, I don’t have a normal job with a 6-12 week maternity leave where my job carries on without me and I pick up where someone left off when I return as if nothing happened.     I have a job that requires hustle.  I don’t work normal hours, 9-5, Monday – Friday.  In all reality, I put in between 50-60 hours a week, Monday – Sunday and am always on call (because my phone is always with me).  And ….. just to clarify, this isn’t a complaint.   What I’m saying is this; I’m not slowing down.  Not today, not tomorrow, and not when the little thing inside me comes to this Earth.  I can’t live my life for the next 5 months worrying about how I’m going to handle having a newborn. I’m So Blessed

by ironborn· January 10, 2017· in Uncategorized· comments
I’m so blessed.     I’m so blessed to have a husband that supports me, day in and day out.   Who told me to leave my public service job as an educator and follow my dreams.  Who said he’d financially support me until I “figured it out”.  Who said if I put my mind to it, I could take on anything life threw at me.     I’m so blessed to have found Iron Legion, a gym who took me in as their own.  Who allowed me to grow with the gym, take on new roles, and expand my wings.  Who never questioned my hustle or drive and trusted my plan.     I’m so blessed to have been given the opportunity to run The World’s Best Boot Camp – North Florida.   A program that has helped me grow as a human, a coach, and a leader.   A program that provides a means for me to affect true change in people’s lives.     I’m so blessed to wake up everyday and genuinely love what I do.  Love who I’ve become.  Love the life that I get to live.      I truly am so blessed.     If I’ve […]

This is the biggest lol right now.  Glowing.  Yeah Right.   The mailman at work essentially just asked me if I was pregnant because I’m “just glowing” and he could “just tell”.   Is “glowing” defined as acne all over your face as if you’re a teenager?  Or backne – also know as acne of the back.  Because I have that too.   PS – I don’t look pregnant just yet … more like I ate a 6 pack of doughnuts and a supersize Chipotle bowl, EVERY DAMN DAY.  Food baby for dayzzz.   I know that “you’re glowing” is supposed to be an endearing term, and I do truly appreciate it, but your girl ain’t glowing.     Why does acne have to be a side effect of pregnancy?  I’ve had clear skin since Freshman year of high school and now all of a sudden it’s like boom, acne everywhere.   Team #nofun at all.     Monthly facials and lots of skin care are on my current agenda but do you have any suggestions for this prego girl?     Let me know!

First and foremost, thank you to all of you who showed Danny and myself so much love over the weekend and continue to do so.  We’re very excited about our pregnancy and look forward to the new life that we will build together with our new bundle of joy.     Now, I want to say this; I am not turning the blog into a pregnancy blog for the next 6 months BUT this is a big part of my life and I will be covering all the topics associated with it is as they come up.  That means the good, the bad, and the ugly.   So, real talk, the past six weeks have been hell.  H-E-double hockey sticks.     There should be a disclaimer for pregnancy, similar to the end of a drug commercial, you know when they talk really fast?  It would sound something like this:   ***read this fast like the commercial disclaimers***   Be prepared to be sick.  Not morning sick but all day sick.  Sick like you drank a whole bottle of pinot grigio.  EVERY SINGLE DAY.  Sick every day, all day, morning, noon, and night.  You will feel like death but you […]

All the sweets.  Literally, everywhere I turn I am faced with chocolate something sprinkled with Holiday amazingness.   The plus side is I’m not a sugar crack head so I can have JUST ONE and stop.     The negative side is that many of you are in fact a sugar crack head, aka, you’re addicted to sugar, and the taste of one piece will drive you into a sugar relapse until the end of time.   Today we’re going to talk sugar addiction, because it is so very real.  Many people have been consuming sugar for so long and it is a large part of their daily life.  Because of these factors, they don’t even realize how bad their addiction truly is.      That is until they try to quit.  Quitting sugar can be compared to quitting cigarettes or any other addictive substance.  It’s hard, there are withdrawals, and you will probably relapse at least once.  But, once you are free from sugar, you will feel so much better.   So how does all this apply to the Holidays?     Well, you need to identify whether you’re a sugar crack head or are clean from your sugar […]

This week in the three part series on nutrition I want to talk about carbohydrates and protein.  In my opinion, carbs are the easiest macronutrient to consume (maybe second to fats) and protein in the hardest.  When I talk to people about nutrition, so often they’re under eating protein by a ton while overeating carbs.     So, the question this week is … how do we tackle this problem?   Well, the first step is to be able to recognize what food items are primarily carbs and which are protein.  Some examples of carbs include: fruit, veggies, potatoes, rice, bread, and anything with lots of sugar.  Protein is pretty easy.  It is meat, meat, meat, nuts, and cheese.   Now that you know what makes up a protein and a carb, let’s address the issue.     We all love carbs and could eat them until we’re blue in the face.  But we shouldn’t.  The keyword here is moderation.  One serving, and fist size portions (remember last week???).     Now for protein; meat isn’t bad but we never seem to eat enough of it.  This is probably because we fill up on carbs before we eat our protein. […]
